how to draw a face looking up

example of different head angles

The Basic Forms

To draw the caput from whatsoever bending you lot must starting time empathize its basic structure. Look past all the distracting details and visualize the underlying forms. This ability to simplify tin can exist practical to the features of the face, but when starting the drawing yous could look even further. Ignore fifty-fifty the features and simplify to the near basic class of the head. I use a method taught past Andrew Loomis in his book, "Drawing the Head & Hands".

The head deconstructed into its basic forms, is a sphere as the cranium and a block as the jaw and cheek bones.

basic forms

A Sphere every bit the Cranium

The sides of the caput are flat, so we can piece off a piece from both sides of the brawl. From profile, this plane will exist a perfect circle, but when drawing it from any other angle, it will appear to be an oval because of perspective. Carve up this oval into quadrants. The vertical line represents the beginning of the jaw. The horizontal line represents the brow line. The top and lesser of the oval help yous find the hair line and the bottom of the nose.

A Cake as the Jaw and Cheek Bones

Attach the shape of the jaw. The top will showtime at the forehead line and the back will start at the center of the oval. This is a 3-D book with a forepart airplane, side planes, and bottom plane (bottom plane is seen from some angles).

Constructing From Whatsoever Bending

Step 1 – Determine the angle of the ball

The angle of the head is established at the very start of the drawing with the ball. All iii axes must be addressed:

X Axis - The up and down tilt is established by the angles of the horizontal and vertical lines in the oval. Besides, on extreme up tilts and down tilts, the thirds volition exist foreshortened because of perspective.

rotate x

Y Axis - The management the head is turning (left or right) is established by the width of the oval. As the head turns towards you, you can see more of the front of the face and less of the side, and so the oval representing the side will get narrower. Similarly, when the head turns away from you, more than of the side plane is revealed and the oval will appear wider.

rotate y

Z Axis - The twist is established by the bending of the center line, the angle of the oval and the placement of the oval on the ball.

rotate z

Stride 2 – Find the thirds

Later establishing the angle of the brawl, carve up the face into thirds. The altitude betwixt the hairline and brow-line should be the same equally the altitude between the brow-line and bottom of the nose. Add that same distance to find the chin. Notice how the  hairline and olfactory organ-line align with the elevation and bottom bottom of the oval when wrapped effectually the face. Imagine the caput equally a box. The thirds must be wrapped around the side plane and front airplane.

Footstep 3 – Add together the jaw

A mutual fault at this point is to make the jaw besides long in comparison to the ball. Make certain to mensurate your thirds correctly and that they relate correctly to the ball. Notice how the shape of the jaw changes from diverse angles.

add the jaw

Stride 4 – Add the features

With this bones structure properly established, it becomes much easier to add together the features in the right place. Cheque back for more data most specific features in a later post.

Exercise inventing the head from all possible angles. Get a sketchbook and fill an entire folio with piffling heads. When drawing without reference photos, you quickly realize where your weaknesses are because y'all can't rely on copying. You can merely work with what you know.
